Each spring, the Huron Police Department offers a 10 week Citizens Police Academy. Topics covered during the academy include: use of force, traffic enforcement, specialized positions within the department, and multiple other topics.
The Prescription Drug Take-Back aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications. More information about this program can be found on the DEA's website HERE.
The Huron Police Department has participated in National Night Out, since 2012. National Night Out is a worldwide campaign involving citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses and local officials. The program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs. Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out is always held the first Tuesday, in August. Huron hosts a community wide block party in Campbell Park, which is in the center of town.
The Huron Police Department teaches the DARE program to all 5th grade students in the Public School District and at Holy Trinity Catholic School. The department has three DARE officers that teach the 10 week curriculum to approximately 200 students every year. DARE is successful in our community because of the generosity shown by the people and businesses that donate time and money to the program every year. If you would like to donate to our local DARE program please contact the School Resource Officer by clicking HERE
Shop with a Cop is an event that takes place during the holiday season and allows less fortunate children to purchase a Christmas present with the assistance of one of our many local first responders. Because of donations from out local businesses last year the event was able to provide Christmas presents to over 50 children. Shop with a Cop takes place at our local Walmart who help coordinate the event. The Huron Police Department works with many organizations within Huron to determine what families would benefit the most from the event.
Battle of the Badges is a fun exciting time when our law enforcement rivalry with the firefighters comes to light. With the help from our city fire department, we play an annual softball game where its blue vs. red. We invite our community out to the ball field to soak up some rays and enjoy the game. All proceeds raised during the event will go back into our local DARE program.

Safety City is a week long program that starts shortly after school gets out. There are lots of safety topics that are presented during the week, such as railroad safety, poison safety, pedestrian safety, and many more. Safety City also has a miniature town with buildings, roads, sidewalks, railroad crossing and crosswalks. The kids practice pedaling a tricycle around town like they are in a motor vehicle. They have to obey traffic laws just like motor vehicle. So, if they see a stop sign, they have to stop. The kids also practice being a pedestrian. They walk on the sidewalk, stop, and look both ways before crossing the street. We are there to help kids understand safety while riding on the street and walking on the sidewalk.
The Huron Police Department has an officer that stops by the kindergarten through 4th grade classes twice a year, in the fall and spring. Each grade level learns about a different safety topic that is tailored for their age group. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, the kids learn about Pedestrian Safety. In 2nd grade they learn about Halloween Safety and Seat Belt Safety. In 3rd grade the kids will learn Street Safe Street Smart and Bicycle Safety. In 4th grade they will learn Seat Belt Safety and Swim Safety. The kids will also review what they were taught over the course of the program to see what they remember.
