Huron Community Foundation

... a community savings account for our future.

The Huron Community Foundation (HCF) is a tax-exempt organization formed in April 2004 to create a community savings account, which will grow and benefit everyone in Huron for generations to come.

The HCF is directed by a group of volunteers. The Board’s first focus is educating the community of the charitable opportunity HCF offers and growing the fund with one-time contributions, multi-year pledges, estate planning and gifts of assets such as stock, real estate or life insurance.

The funds are deposited with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF), which invests the dollars and returns earned interest to the Huron Community Foundation for grant distributions. Grant applications are accepted annually February 15 - April 15, 2008. Applications are available from the Huron Chamber & Visitors Bureau office or in the News section of this (see right side of page) Web site. The first grants were distributed in February 2006. The 2008 grants will be awarded at the Canaries game on May 2, 2008.

Gifts Keep Giving
Because only the proceeds from HCF’s invested fund are distributed through the grant process, your gift continues to grow for many years to come. The examples below show how initial investments from $100 to $50,000 can grow over the next 50 years from $250 to $125,000 in benefit to the Huron community.

Examples:

$100 initial Investment X 5% =

    $5 annually X 50 years =

$5

$250

$1,000 initial Investment X 5%

    $50 annually X 50 years

$50

$2,500

$5,000 initial Investment X 5%

    $250 annually X 50 years

$250

$12,500

$50,000 initial Investment X 5%

    $2,500 annually X 50 years

The A's team is also the last Major League Baseball Team to three-peat.  Also back, will be the Jack Links Premium Cuts Tailgate Party.  Stay tuned for details on all the great fun you've come to expect from this annual community event.

How HCF Works

Funds contributed to the Huron Community Foundation are held as an advised fund within the South Dakota Community Foundation. The total endowment of more than $60 million is invested by the SDCF’s Investment Manager. SDCF’s 15-year average investment return in 2006 was more than 8.5 percent. SDCF allows each fund to distribute five percent of the fund’s average fair market value each year. More information about SDCF is available online at www.sdcommunityfoundation.org.

SDCF charges an administrative fee of approximately 1.1 percent. Distributions are limited to fund earnings less administrative fee. Earnings in excess of distributions and administrative fee are credited directly to the account, increasing the value of the fund.
Example:

Community Fund $100,000
Earnings (8.5% avg.)    $8,500
Grant Distributions (5%) ($5,000)
Administrative Fee (1.1%) ($1,100)
New Account Balance $102,400
