City of Huron

   Welcome from the Mayor

Mention Huron to a South Dakotan and you will likely stir

memories of warm summer nights, livestock shows, and

gathering with old friends at the summer's main event, the

S.D. State Fair. Take another look and you will see Huron

is rich with history and local charm.

While visiting, take in the local lore as it is portrayed

through the eyes of the artists that have captured "life on

the prairie" on larger-than-life murals that use buildings as their canvas throughout the streets of historic downtown. There are more than 20 outdoor murals to experience, with new ones added annually.

Are museums more your style? The home of Gladys Pyle, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate, is a well-preserved example of Queen Anne architecture with original woodwork, fixtures, and leaded stain glass windows. Then head across town to the Dakotaland Museum located on the S.D. State Fairgrounds. You will find a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts, historical documents, photographs, maps, and newspapers that portray the Spirit of Dakota heritage that is alive and well in Huron and the surrounding area.

While in Huron, you may also want to take the opportunity to visit one of three Hutterite colonies and experience their unique lifestyle. Discover people whose ingenuity allows them to fashion their own clothing, handcraft their own furniture, and live in a self-sustained community.

You can't leave Huron until you have stopped for a photo-op with the "World's Largest Pheasant". Located on Highway 14 East, the 28-foot tall, 22-ton pheasant built of fiberglass and steel stands proud as a reminder to all that Huron remains a premier hunting destination. Enjoy your stay and thanks for visiting Huron!

Sincerely,

Mayor David McGirr
