Garbage Collection
Residential
- The City will provide each residential household in Huron with a brown container for their once per week garbage collection. The containers are the property of the City of Huron and must remain with the address that receives them. If you move do not take the container with you.
- A Green Yard Waste Container may be purchased from the City. After the one time purchase fee there are no additional charges for the collection which will run from May through October. These containers are owned by the purchaser, and may be taken with them when they move.
Business
- Metal garbage dumpsters are available in 3 & 4 yard capacities for commercial accounts. Collections can be made as few as one time per week or as many as six times per week. They are meant for office or household type garbage. No wood, furniture, metal, tires, batteries, tree branches, or yard waste is to be placed in these dumpsters.
Services
Yard Waste
Yard Waste Collection
As indicated by the color-coded calendar yard waste will be picked up on Wednesdays. The crews will cover the entire city on that day and will only collect yard waste which is placed in the green containers. Yard waste is to consist of grass, leaves, and garden vegetation that is to be placed loose (un-bagged) in the green container. Pet waste and branches (no thicker than 3 inches in diameter) can also be placed loose in the containers. However, the branches must be placed in a way to prevent obstructing the rest of the material in the container so that all of the waste is able to pass through the container when being emptied. The lid must also be able to close completely. The cost to purchase a yard waste container is $67.84.
Yard Waste Drop-off Site
Residents may dispose of yard waste at no charge at the city’s drop-off site located east of the James River Bridge on 3rd Street SE and north of the rubble site. This site is well marked with signs and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Yard waste consists of: grass, leaves, garden vegetations, pet waste, and branches no larger than 3” in diameter. You must empty bags and place them in the dumpster provided.
Compost Purchase
The City of Huron uses yard waste such as trees, grass, branches and manure along with bio-degradable oils from LSI to create some of the best organic soil amendment you can buy. It is called Great Plains Classic Compost and you can purchase it at the city’s Rubble Site, 1901 9th Street SE.

Rules and Guidelines
Please observe the following rules and guidelines when hauling solid waste materials to the facility:
Load Requirements
All loads must be secured! Loads which contain loose material that may blow out must be tarped and tied. Loads of branches need to be tied to prevent branches from falling out, and trees must be loaded so that they do not drag on the road. Loads must be within the bounds of the trailer or vehicle and arranged so that the endgate can be installed. All unsecured loads are subject to a $20.00 MAINTENANCE FEE plus the normal dump fee.
Inspections
All loads brought to the transfer station are subject to inspections to screen out prohibited materials. Individuals who bring in prohibited materials are subject to fines and penalties. Individuals bringing solid waste to the landfill must identify the type of materials on the load. Haulers are encouraged to bring in only one type of material at a time. Mixed loads must be separated by the hauler for disposal in the proper areas. Haulers who cross contaminate the separate disposal areas are subject to fines, penalties, and/or being banned from future use of the landfill site.
